Cody Obst, Artistic Director
An emerging musical force in Calgary, Cody Obst is now a well-known and loved musical figure. A musician who wears many hats, he is a talented pianist, organist, and conductor. His adventurous projects have enhanced the cultural life of Calgary for the last 10 years and will continue to do so in the future!
Mr. Obst's primary study was completed at Brandon University and the University of Calgary (with professor Charles Foreman), where he specialized in piano performance. As pianist, Mr. Obst has competed and performed at all levels including two national competitions, several international festivals, and given concerts throughout Western Canada. A full-time church organist since the age of 14, he has provided thousands of hours of reflective and inspirational music over the years.
As a conductor, Mr. Obst studied extensively with Dr. Earl Davey at Brandon University (a student of Claudio Abbado.) He has produced and conducted many concerts in Calgary including a series of very successful Choral Christmas Concerts at the Cathedral Church of the Redeemer and has had the privilege of working with many great choirs, including the Vancouver Chamber Choir.
In addition to Co-Directing the Calgary Multicultural Choir, Mr. Obst is Music Director at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, board member of the Canadian Voice Care Foundation, teaches private piano and theory lessons, and regularly performs as a recitalist.
Mr. Obst's aim is to bring joy in music making to all those he comes in contact with--and his music has taken him throughout Canada, USA, Denmark, England, France, and Japan. His former teacher Dr. Joan Miller writes, "In addition to his ability as a top notch pianist Cody has shown a great aptitude for teaching. ... His cheerful, up beat, outgoing and generous personality will stand him in good stead as a Canadian performer and I would surmise will facilitate his outreach to bring art to the people in our society."
